Most of us have walked past a homeless person selling The Big Issue, begging or just sitting on the pavement. Many of us have thought ‘What can I do to help?’ We are not sure whether it is the right thing to give money or food.
There are no official figures of the number of homeless people in the UK. After a period of reducing, it is thought that the number is increasing. According to government figures, there were 2,414 people sleeping on the streets in autumn 2013, an increase of 37% compared to 2010 when numbers were first collected in this way. London accounted for nearly a quarter of those at 543 (22%) (Department for Communities and Local Government, 2014).
