As a parent of two twentysomethings and a teenager, I have been sharply reminded of late of the challenges of career paths and educational options. What we think we knew about ourselves at 18 years of age can differ greatly a whole decade later and we may be living to regret the choice we made way back when. For some of us, however, we may well end up pursuing a working life that exactly matches those early dreams of ‘what I want to be when I grow up’ and for those lucky few, we are still doing a job for which we had passion. Happily, the 13-year-old version of me who wanted to be a professional writer lives on.
