Dental nurses have an important role in advising parents on children’s oral health. Hazel Coey outlines the main, evidence-based health messages and suggests how nurses should present them so they are taken on board

Nutrition is key to oral health, and dental nurses can offer evidence-based advice on this. Nurses should use the three Ps—making the advice positive, personal and practical—so it is adopted by families.

This article gives examples of evidence-based preventive oral health messages to prevent tooth decay, and shows how to make the advice positive, personal and practical.

The latest research includes Delivering Better Oral Health, which is an evidence-based toolkit for preventive care (Department of Health (DH) and the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry, 2009). This makes several recommendations.
