Generally, the regulations and procedures intended to prevent accident or injury in any public environment encompasses the area of health and safety. The general foundation of health and safety law is encompassed in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 along with other associated regulations. The purpose of this Act is to protect all those who work at the premise and any member of the public that visits who may be affected by the work activities of the employees. The employer, often the employing dentist, has a duty of care to adhere to the Health and Safety Act. Simply put, the Act protects the health and safety of any individual: employer, employees, contractors, patients and/or visitors affiliated with a particular work site – such as a dental practice.
