According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) ‘is the law that requires employers to control substances hazardous to health’. It is a legal requirement to follow COSHH and it fully applies in dentistry.
A hazardous substance may include chemicals, such as cleaning supplies and dental materials (e.g. amalgam, restorative material, etc), latex (e.g. gloves), bodily fluids (e.g. saliva and blood), fumes, vapours, mist, dust (e.g dental laboratories), gases and biological agents (e.g. Botox or Botulinum toxin). Essentially, it is any substance that is capable of causing a negative impact on a person’s health. However, it does not include lead, asbestos, high pressures, extreme temperatures and radioactive material.
