This issue, we hear from dental nurse Emma Bond who took the time to write an email on the topic of dental nurses and professionalism. In essence, she suggested that a tattoo does not make or break a dental nurse's efficiency, skill set or employability and she took to task current regulations that suggest only ‘discreet’ tattoos are acceptable. Whilst this is open to individual interpretation, she argues that body art should not be a consideration when listing the criteria for professionalism. With an increasing number of people – and a widening age range with a more varied social economic status – embracing the tattoo trend, she suggests that the rules (and attitudes that they encourage) are somewhat outdated.
