Dental nurse Sarah Haslam explains how one project is raising awareness of the importance of good mouth care within a hospital and community care setting

The Mouth Care Matters project is part of a Health Education England, Kent, Surrey and Sussex initiative to improve the oral health of hospitalised patients. There are 16 Mouth Care Matters leads across hospitals Kent, Surrey and Sussex, who come from a variety of backgrounds that includes dental nursing, speech and language and general nursing.

Their role is to support and assist nurses, nursing assistants, doctors and allied health professionals involved in delivering good mouth care to our patients in hospital. Dental nurse Sarah Haslam's remit is to raise awareness about the importance of delivering good mouth care and how patients' oral health is an important factor in their recovery. Making mouths more comfortable assists the patients' ability to eat, she also treats oral infections to support palliative care patients with sore, ulcerated mouths and much more.
