Mindfulness – a power boost for a busy lifestyle

4 mins read Mentoring, reflection and PDPs
Glenys Bridges considers how harnessing this philosophical practice may redress the balance when the many demands of your professional world take over

Mindfulness is a very old philosophical approach that has been proven, through scientific research, to be beneficial for those of us with demanding professional lifestyles. Leading organisations as diverse as the UK's largest employer – the NHS – and the American Marines are amongst the many to recognise this. They actively encourage their people to develop mindfulness skills because they lead to enhanced emotional intelligence and increased:

Self awareness

Energy levels

Attention span

Productivity.

As a result of these benefits many practising mindfulness find that they build more effective working relationships, leading to an increased sense of wellbeing and personal effectiveness. Mindfulness offers a creative helping hand toward a new way of thinking that will enable you to catch your breath and renew your energy when you are always so busy that the hectic pace of your life prevents you from ‘savouring the moment’, acknowledging your emotions, or understanding your interpretation of events, or when you feel you're being helplessly swept along by events and find it difficult to wind down and have a restful night's sleep.
