Meeting GDC expectations with CPD fulfilment

5 mins read CPD requirements GDC
This article is the second in a series of case studies illustrating the roles and responsibilities of the registered dental nurse. They will also describe the guidance that is available, and the steps and precautions necessary, to avoid the potential legal and ethical problems that will be discussed

Registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) became mandatory after 1 August 2008, for every dental care professional (DCP) who had responsibility for patient care.

The tasks that each DCP group are expected to carry out are clearly and specifically described by the GDC (2009), in their publication Scope of Practice.

But with the right to provide treatment, both directly as well as in a supporting role, came the obligation to both maintain, and enhance, the skills needed.

All registered DCPs are therefore required, by the GDC, to carry out a minimum number of hours of continuing professional development (CPD). Failure to do so can place an individual’s registration at risk.
