The ABCDE approach is a systematic way of assessing and managing a medical emergency and ensures we assess and treat the most life-threatening problems first. It provides a structured approach so teams work together and nothing is missed. It doesn’t rely on an ability to make a diagnosis, only to recognise that someone is unwell. When we approach a casualty, we need to ensure our own safety before trying to get a response. We use the ABCDE approach in any casualty who is breathing. Our unconscious casualty, who is not breathing, requires CPR.
