Love in practice

Sarah Buxton discusses the implications of intra-practice romance.

In the world of dental practices, romantic relationships are fairly common. Contrary to what some people believe, there are no legal limitations specifically barring the employment of two people who are in a relationship. It would be onerous and unrealistic for an employer to interfere with a team member’s right to have a private life by trying to ban relationships at work. Of course, professionalism is key at all times, both when relationships are blooming and in the event of them failing. There will be other practical issues which could impact a practice too should members of staff be in a relationship, for example like wanting to take annual leave at the same time. It is important for a practice to have an honest and open culture regarding this subject matter so that all parties involved are protected.
