Looking back and looking forward

Over the last 5 years there have been a considerable number of changes in dentistry that have irreversibly altered the course of the profession. Sam Ball looks at these changes, and predicts their impact on the future of the industry

Each year seems to bring about yet more change for the dental profession. It is important to spend some time reflecting on the significant developments that we have observed and continue to prepare for and respond to the future.

In April 2006 we saw the implementation of the current dental contract which intended to reform and improve NHS dentistry. We saw NHS commissioning teams implement the contracts, patient charges change and the arrival of Units of Dental Activity (UDAs). This contract is now set to change, once more, with the second stage of the pilots currently being applied for. It is expected that prevention of dental disease will be at the heart of the new contract and therefore further opportunities for dental nurses may present themselves.
