The recovery position is an important component of the 'Airway Breathing Circulation Disability Exposure (ABCDE)' approach to the assessment and treatment of the acutely ill patient.

It is recommended in a patient who is unconscious, but breathing normally. It can also be beneficial in some non-acute situations e.g. someone who has fainted but has not fully recovered, despite the usual interventions, such as raising the legs.

The aim of this article is to understand the procedure for placing a patient in the recovery position.
