Once upon a time, a leader was considered at the top of a pyramid – the pinnacle of any hierarchy. To get there we had to, ‘work our way upwards’ to achieve that much-coveted leadership role. This scenario was especially the case in dentistry and, in particular, in primary care settings where practices were something of a patriarchal set-up and progress for women was limited.

A recent paper focusing on women in the dental workforce published last September notes that statistics from the World Health Organisation showed that 70 per cent of the world’s health and social care workforce was female yet only made up 25 per cent of global health leadership positions.
