Leadership needs of dental nurses

2 mins read Opinions

What happens to dental practices when their dental nurses become totally disillusioned by the lack of recognition and opportunties to contribute to patient care? How long will dental nurses continue to invest in their professional development before they conclude that the return on their investment is not worthwhile?

I strongly suspect that we shall discover the answer to these questions in numerous practices before too long.

Dental nurses are increasingly asking when they will be allowed to escalate their skills and contribute to the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in general dental practices.

When reading published reports from authoritative bodies such as Looking Ahead (General Dental Council (GDC), 2012) and the Dental Contract Uplift and Efficiencies 2014/15 (NHS England, 2014), it becomes clear that there is an official agenda to encourage practices to make wider use of their dental care professionals (DCPs). So why is there still so little evidence of changes taking root for dental nurses in most general dental practices, where the vast majority work?
