The tragic case of Sarah Everard, murdered by Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens after he kidnapped her under the guise of an arrest, has shone a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. From street safety to domestic violence, the statistics are alarming.

In the year to March 2020, 207 women were killed in England, Scotland and Wales. This means about one in four killings were of women. According to a report by the BBC, in the past decade there were 4,493 male victims of killings and 2,075 female victims (31 per cent) in England and Wales. More than nine out of 10 killers were men. About 57 per cent of female victims were killed by someone they knew, most commonly a partner or ex-partner. This compares with 39 per cent of men.
