Oormila Selvarajah breaks down some of the causes behind the current struggle with dental nurse retention.

We all know the old saying, ‘It’s not about the destination but the journey’, don’t we? But if we are honest, whilst on the journey we can feel utterly underappreciated at times, and as though no one minds pushing us to the absolute limit...

Let me give you a little background about me. I graduated as a biomedical scientist from Southampton University and later went on to complete dentistry at Ramachandra University, India, for the experience and change of scene. This however meant that I had to complete my conversion exam with the GDC upon my return to the UK, so during the long-hauled wait, I worked and progressed through the dental practices as a trainee nurse, receptionist, treatment coordinator, and practice manager. I am currently working as a dental therapist and hygienist in Kent and studying towards my postgraduate diploma in periodontics, and the final part of my conversion exam.
