Keeping it locum-friendly

Yakini Lateefah gives the inside edge on welcoming a locum dental nurse to the practice.

My dental nursing career started as a trainee at Bart’s Royal London Dental Hospital. I then qualified and went into a mixed NHS practice where I stayed for two years. I left as I was keen to expand my knowledge within dentistry and felt there was a whole dental world I didn’t yet know. I’ve been a locum for the last seven years now, and although I’ve had the odd permanent position, I always temp alongside my part-time jobs.

Why did you become a locum?

I became a locum as I longed for a work/ life balance that I could control. I was always very keen to expand my knowledge in dentistry. Working as a locum has allowed me to practise in every aspect of dentistry, something I wouldn’t have been able to do if I had stayed in one practice. I love the variety – every practice is unique and sets up in its own way, even the corporate clinics. It also comes with a great deal of flexibility.
