In this article I look at the issue of tattoos in the workplace. I will cover whether employers have the right to ask employees to cover them up, dismiss those who choose to get tattooed whilst being employed or even refuse to employ individuals with visible tattoos.

Does acceptance of tattoos depend on your job?

It is perhaps no surprise that an individual’s job can impact acceptance or otherwise of visible tattoos. A YouGov survey looked at the attitudes people have towards those with tattoos, asking whether people thought more positively, or less so, of people with tattoos.

The findings revealed 36 per cent thought less positively of tattooed people and three per cent more positively. Interestingly, in a post-pandemic context, 44 per cent of respondents said a large visible tattoo would make no difference to how they thought of that individual who had it.
