In everything from vaccines to personal protective equipment (PPE), the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the pace of change. Before the coronavirus, the notion of developing, testing and rolling out a vaccine to meet the threat of a new virus in less than 18 months was considered virtually impossible. Yet, faced with the threat of the pandemic, the scientific establishment responded magnificently with not just one but a whole host of vaccines now being rolled out across the world.

Before then it was PPE, with firms switching to mask, gown and glove manufacture almost overnight and a remarkable push by industry – everyone from vacuum manufacturers to Formula One racing teams – to design and build thousands of ventilators.
