Inhalation sedation – looking forward to the digital age

As we progress into the 21st century, Janet Pickles suggests it is good to reflect on the origins of the modern inhalation sedation (or relative analgesia) machine

Without the groundbreaking development work carried out in the mid-20th century, we would perhaps not have quite the useful range of sedation equipment available today.

From a British perspective, we start just post-war in 1947, with three men – Wilf Jones, Bill Edmondson and Lord George Wellesley (a sleeping partner) boldly forming two companies in Keighley, West Yorkshire: Cyprane and Anaesthetic Equipment Ltd. The intention was to develop a range of anaesthetic equipment and this included items such as the Tecota, AE Gas Machine and the ‘Tec’ range of temperature compensated anaesthetic vaporizers. In this endeavour they were very successful, the Tec range of vaporisers still being in use today across the world, mostly Isotec 3 types.
