Indemnity – how much protection do I need?

Dental nurses may feel increasingly worried about their potential liability regarding complaints, claims or General Dental Council (GDC) action against them. Andrew Collier considers potential risks and how to protect your professional status

Registration of dental nurses, on 1 August 2008, was a big breakthrough in recognising the nurse's skills and professionalism. However, the privileges of registration also brought responsibilities. Those responsibilities are not just confined to working within the dental surgery, and the treatment of patients, but extend to the nurse's personal life and conduct.

Registration with the GDC is a requirement of all team members who are responsible for direct patient treatment. The GDC has clear ethical requirements for every registrant. The central guidance; Standards for the Dental Team, describes what is required of all registrants, both inside and outside of the surgery or clinic.
