Indemnity and how it protects the dental nurse

5 mins read Indemnity and registration
Indemnity protects the career and professional status of the dental nurse, and a basic level of indemnity is essential. Different kinds of indemnity are available, and dental nurses need to understand them so they can choose the most appropriate for their role

Registration was a breakthrough in recognising the skills and professionalism of dental nurses. However, with rights and privileges came responsibilities and obligations. It can sometimes be forgotten that these responsibilities are not confined to the dental surgery and the treatment of patients, but extend to the nurses’ personal life as well.

In practical terms, this had always been the case. For example, before registration there would still have been a clear expectation that dental nurses would not disclose details of a patient's treatment, even where they did not have direct responsibility for confidentiality when treating patients.

It was also expected that dental nurses’ personal behaviour would be of an acceptable standard and would not reflect adversely upon a practice or surgery or the dental profession as a whole. This applied even when dental nurses had no formal professional recognition of their role.
