How to volunteer – a true-life experience in a refugee camp

Whatever we may think of the state of dentistry here in the UK, like food and clean water, access to adequate dental care is by no means universal. This, despite the fact that oral health is integral to general health and a basic human right.

According to FDI World Dental Federation1, caries is the most common childhood disease and non-communicable disease (NCD) worldwide. Between 60-90% of children are affected but the majority of dental decay remains untreated due to inappropriate, unaffordable or unavailable oral health care services.

Indeed, untreated tooth decay was the most prevalent disease condition among 291 diseases studied in the Global Burden of Disease Study (1990-2010).
