Eloise Meldrum looks at the pros and cons of locum work

Why did you give up the security of a steady job in favour of locum work?

It was a huge wrench to leave the organisation and my colleagues, who were a great team. However, I felt that locum work would give me greater flexibility to balance my time, and I’m pleased to say it has worked out that way.I was experiencing some anxiety, and switching to locum work has helped me feel more in control, and able to manage those feelings.

The majority of locum work, including my own, will mean the individual is self-employed, although some agencies do offer employed roles. I found the pay higher as a daily rate if I was self-employed, and this was largely behind my decision to choose that option. There are, of course, pros and cons to each, and it will really depend on individual preferences and circumstances.
