How to set up your own businessHow to set up your own business

Variety is the spice of life for dental nurse Charlotte Lindsey. A fairly new recruit to the profession, her expansive experience has inspired her to to set up as a locum – an exciting next step in her career

I actually grew up at the dentist. My mum has been a dental nurse ever since she did her work experience at 15 years old back in 1979. I can remember as a child, sitting behind the desk with the receptionist drawing pictures while she worked. However, I had no real interest in dentistry until I paid for private orthodontic treatment a few years ago. I realised the impact that dental treatment can have on people and I wanted to get involved!

Officially, I have been qualified for just over a year and have more than two years' experience as a dental nurse, so I am still fairly new to the game! I am well aware of how times have changed over the years with regard to the perception of dental nurses. It is amazing how the role has evolved and dental nurses are now considered a respected member of the dental team. I think today is a great time to become a dental nurse. Nevertheless, the perception of dental nurses does vary from practice to practice and person to person. Sadly, I do often still hear the phrase ‘only a dental nurse’. I think it is important to work for an employer who values you as an individual and knows of the potential the role of a dental nurse can have.
