How to prevent 'never events'

3 mins read Record keeping
A look at how the dental nurse’s skill in charting can help to identify the correct tooth in order to avoid a detrimental outcome

Never events, such as wrong site surgery, are still somewhat prevalent when carrying out dental extractions. It is therefore paramount that processes are put in place to avoid such occurrences. This paper hopes to explore and address the crucial stages before operation is carried out and the different methods that can be implemented in order to reduce the occurrence of these ‘never events’.

This paper investigates the prevention of wrong tooth extraction by implementing a standard pre-check protocol as part of the World Health Organisation (WHO) checklist.
