The stress epidemic across healthcare organisations is as vast as it is shocking. Some 40% of NHS staff report feeling unwell due to work-related stress (NHS staff survey 2018), with sickness costing an alarming £2.4 billion a year.
Examining the suicide rates amongst our doctors and dentists really hits home the need to take wellbeing seriously. Sadly, female practitioners, in particular, have been found to be 2.5 to 4 times more likely to commit suicide than the general population (Hampton, 2005). Ten per cent of UK dentists in recent research had suicidal thoughts in the last 12 months compared to 5% of the general population (Toon et al, 2019).
