
Hundreds of dental professionals took part in the UK’s largest-ever dental handpiece survey in 2022, highlighting huge disparities among dental practices. Aura Infection Control, based in County Durham, is one of the UK’s leading authorities in decontamination and cross-infection control. It commissioned the survey along with the Society of British Dental Nurses.
Whether they use an air turbine or an electric motor to drive the head, today’s hand tools spin at astonishing speeds (up to 400,000rpm in the case of a variable torque air-driven turbine).
The high speeds are required to prepare cavities for repair and restoration by the rapid removal of enamel and tissue. But modern-day tools with their myriad passageways and precision-engineered turbines, present a major decontamination challenge.
