The current UK guidance for infection control in dentistry (HTM 01-05, DH 2013) emphasises the importance of protein removal from instruments as part of a strategy to minimise the potential for transfer of prions between patients.
HTM 01-01 (DH 2016) states as one of its key aims that all surgical instruments should be decontaminated to a level where less than 5µg of residual protein is detectable per instrument side, using a fluorescence based, in-situ protein detection method. Implementation of these measures came into force in July 2017 for neurosurgery and are set to be in place for all other surgical areas by July 2018.
