Piotr Chmielewski is the epitome of a great dental nurse, according to dentist Kunal Shah. Here, the newly qualified 'hardworking guy' talks about changing lives – and perceptions

Why dentistry?

I always planned to go into the medical field but never made up my mind as to which direction. Then I stumbled upon the opportunity to do an apprenticeship in dental nursing. I always knew I wanted to help people, and dentistry has allowed me to do so – from getting people out of pain to full smile makeovers, which are life changing.

What character traits do you think you need as a dental nurse?

It is important to be empathetic and caring so that speaking to patients comes naturally to help to build a bond with the patient and make them feel at ease when in the dental chair. As we all know, a large number of the public have a fear of visiting the dentist. I find being empathetic and caring from the moment the patient walks into the surgery helps build a bond and puts them at ease, so they have a more pleasant experience.
