Helping the homeless – a look behind the scenes

3 mins read Decontamination/HTM 01-05
As part of a series looking at dentistry in ‘unusual environments’, Emma Buday, dental nurse and practice manager, details her involvement with Dentaid’s mobile unit scheme for the homeless

The state of oral health in homeless and vulnerable people has become a growing concern for many in the dental profession.

To help overcome this issue – and increase access to safe and essential dental care – the charity Dentaid is now offering a number of outreach programmes in various parts of the UK, via its mobile dental unit.

With the help of volunteers and dental practice teams who wish to offer outreach dentistry to local residents in need, Dentaid has been able to make a positive difference to a number of communities. One volunteer helping to improve oral health for homeless people is practice manager and dental nurse Emma Buday, who works at Centre for Dentistry Sainsbury's Christchurch in Hampshire.
