Clare Clark talks about effective infection control protocols in a dental setting

In 2016, two dentists were struck off and a dental nurse suspended indefinitely for serious professional breaches, which included putting patients at risk due to a lack of commitment to hand hygiene procedures. The dentist in Nottingham did not change his gloves or wash his hands between patients and was reported to be ‘wiping his hands on his tunic or trousers instead of washing them’. A second dentist was frequently observed ‘wearing the same pair of gloves for a whole set of check-ups’. The dental nurse failed to wash her hands between patients or change her gloves. The GDC described their behaviour as ‘fundamentally incompatible with being a dental professional’.
