Mentoring should never be underestimated. It can be applied to different situations in different timeframes and in a number of contexts. Fiona Ellwood explains how

There is still much misunderstanding of what mentoring is and how it can be best utilised. Whatever the position, the most effective approach to mentoring is the person-centred approach. This means that the person in the mentoring relationship is at the centre of the mentoring activity rather than the problem.

So, what is mentoring?

There are a number of definitions. The more traditional of definitions and antiquated approaches suggest that mentoring is undertaken by someone who is more senior, wiser, older and, more often than not, male. Mentors of the past would share their experience with the mentee in an attempt to offer an answer to a problem.
