Lifestyle interventions can cover a gap in dental healthcare, but it may require a push from you to get patients over the first hurdle

We all know the risks and dangers of drinking alcohol. But, despite today's awareness, an alarming amount of us continue to drink more than we should.

The number of alcohol consumers in the UK has increased substantially over the last century. Around 40 million British adults regularly consume alcoholic drinks and, while many of us do so moderately, about 25% exceed Department of Health guidelines. As frontline health care professionals, there is an expectation upon the dental team to identify and offer brief advice – interventions that can be delivered routinely in general dental practice and that should happen at every opportunity, not only when we suspect patients may be heavy drinkers.
