In a world of toothy Instagram grins and sparkling smiles, it can be easy to forget that our diet plays a vital role, not just for a fit body but also for our teeth. So, let’s look at the insightful connection between what we eat and our dental health.
Cheese: a tooth superhero
Yes all types of cheese fall into this category. All flavours, shapes and smells (including the stinky blue one!) are welcome at the party! If you’ve ever needed a good excuse to munch on more of this delightful type of dairy, here it is: cheese is basically a superhero for your teeth. It’s rich in calcium, which strengthens your teeth, and it also helps balance the pH level in your mouth. The calcium found in cheese can help to re-mineralise tooth enamel and prevent erosion due to acids (and other harmful substances). Eating more cheese can help to neutralise the acids in your mouth. Foods and beverages like coffee, fizzy drinks, and citrus drinks like orange juices can lower the pH levels in your mouth, increasing the risk of enamel erosion and cavities.
