Flying the flag for dental nursing

Following Brexit, what now for dentistry and, in particular, dental nurses? In this guest editorial, Janine Brooks ponders a changing British landscape

At this point, I can still only put forward my thoughts on the information we have so far. Being within Europe meant that dental professionals could move throughout European Union (EU) member countries to work freely. This meant that professionals who qualified in, for example, Belgium or Lithuania did not need to have completed foundation or any other specific training before registering with the General Dental Council (GDC) and working in the United Kingdom (UK). I think it is fair to come to the conclusion that this will no longer hold true once the UK leaves the EU. After that time I expect that dental professionals who wish to work in the UK from overseas may be asked to undertake some sort of training, possibly similar to the Overseas Registration Examination currently undertaken by professionals who qualify in non-European Union countries. It may be that special arrangements will be agreed for those dental professionals whose primary dental qualification was obtained from a non-UK EU country and who are currently registered with the GDC and working in the UK. A similar special arrangement would presumably apply to UK qualified dental professionals currently working in a non-UK EU country to allow them to remain working where they settled. This is my personal speculation.
