From beauty salon to dental nurse and now a student dental hygienist – Megan Tompkins talks to Eloise Meldrum about her blossoming career

I have been in the dental industry for nearly four years. Prior to this, I was working in the world of make up and beauty. The beauty industry was always something I had loved and was technical in nature, but I found it too competitive and quite hard to make a regular income. I looked around at other options and a mentor suggested going into dentistry, as it had many of the similar skills needed in beauty, such as dexterity, hygiene and cross infection and the need to engage with clients/patients. So I looked on the government website for apprenticeships and went for a few interviews and decided to go for it. I am so pleased that I did.
