With a strong background in dental, Magda has not only been a dental nurse but has experienced hiring dental nurses as a regional practice manager. As a member of several online dental forums, she has witnessed first-hand the growing frustration of dental nurses for some time. The pandemic it seems was a nudge for many dental nurses to re-evaluate what they are doing, where they are in their careers, and what other options are out there for them.
It has long been the plight of SmileWisdom’s co-founder Mike Hutter to raise awareness of how dental nurses have a tendency to be undervalued and their skills not recognised enough. Pre-Covid-19 there was a tendency for practices to think they were doing nurses a favour by hiring them, yet the pandemic has shown just how important it is to have someone skilled when working in the pressurised environment of a medical setting. Dental practices are slowly realising the true value of their dental nurses and that without them they would be lost. As the Dentistry Census discovered, dental nurses were ‘considered to be ‘essential’ to the success of a practice by 84 per cent of respondents.”
