FGM – understanding the effects

2 mins read Safeguarding
How does this form of child abuse affect your role as a dental professional?

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a form of child abuse prevalent in many parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It is sometimes referred to as ‘female circumcision’ or ‘cutting’. The process of FGM involves mutilating or removing the female genitalia and there are no medical benefits.

FGM is an extremely painful procedure and it can cause significant harm to the victim, with many cases known to have resulted in death. It is important for dental professionals to be aware of the effects of FGM. The procedure is illegal in the UK, and it is also illegal for families to send young girls abroad to undergo the procedure in another country. However, many thousands of cases are still reported every year.
