Kaamilah Shitta-Bey navigates the maze of mouth cancer and oral health misinformation.

Mouth cancer remains a significant public health concern in the UK, with approximately 10,825 new cases diagnosed in the past year (Oral Health Foundation). Globally, cancers of the lip and oral cavity account for an estimated 377,713 new cases and 177,757 deaths annually (WHO, 2020). Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) represents approximately 90 per cent of oral malignancies, with a five-year mortality rate nearing 50 per cent (Ramos- Garcia et al., 2022).

Despite its increasing prevalence, widespread misconceptions about mouth cancer persist among both the general public and healthcare professionals. These misunderstandings often lead to delays in seeking care, with many patients failing to have oral lesions examined promptly. Such misconceptions can have serious consequences for prevention, early detection, and treatment outcomes.
