Ensuring high-quality images in dental radiography

Good-quality radiographs are essential for accurate diagnoses. Noman Khawaja looks at assessing image quality, common problems and good practice, and Jillian Eastmond discusses the qualifications and training needed by those working in dental radiography

The importance of a good-quality radiograph cannot be overestimated. From a clinician's perspective, the diagnosis must be accurate if patients are to receive the best treatment. Radiographs must provide enough information to be interpreted without doubt, and be diagnostically excellent.

The clinician interpreting the radiograph will broadly look for the following qualities:

? Correct and well-shown anatomy, whether it be, for example, contrast between enamel and dentine, or showing the condyle head on panoramic views

? Being able to view the apices of teeth on periapical radiographs

? Good contrast between radioopaque and radiolucent areas

? Correct positioning of the patient

? No blurring

? No overlapping areas
