Embracing empowerment

Rebecca Silver offers her top tips for reaching your career goals.

If you are reading this then there is a good chance you are a dental nurse. If so, I would like to ask you to reflect on your career so far, and ask how happy you are with your current trajectory? Is there anything that could make your time at work that extra bit easier? More manageable? Less terrifying?

Hopefully these few tips will help you achieve a sense of empowerment within your life and career, without it costing you a penny!

Develop a positive attitude

This tip is probably one of the hardest to do, especially as a lot is happening in the world which means remaining positive can feel difficult at the best of times. Start by making a small list at the end of the day detailing the situations or things that bring you joy, and then focus on that list. By incorporating practices like this, you should start to pay attention to the positives in what at times can feel like a deeply negative or apathetic world. If a patient gave you an extra thank you, or if a colleague made you tea unprompted, if you caught the train, bus or tube on time, or maybe you just finished your day at the correct time, then you should write this down and count it as one of life’s small but vital wins. It doesn’t have to be extensive, extravagant or expensive, it just requires you to be honest, and a little optimistic.
