Covid-19 proved to be a major stressor in many people’s lives for a prolonged period of time and sadly we saw a rise in mental health and domestic abuse cases as a direct result. The ever-rising cost of living and existing in uncertain times only serves to fuel the fire of tensions that may lead to cases of violence and abuse in children and the clinically vulnerable.
An NSPCC 2020 briefing commented, “The causes of abuse and neglect are manifold and complex (Munro et al, 2014) but we know from research that maltreatment is more likely to occur when caregivers become overburdened by their circumstances, and that children become more vulnerable to experiencing abuse under certain conditions.”
