Early dental decay – is it simply fuelled by a lack of knowledge?

Claire Stevens, a consultant in paediatric dentistry, is passionate about changing the tide on kids' poor oral health and believes that non-judgemental sharing of information is the way forward. She talks to Julie Bissett

Tooth decay is the leading cause of child hospital admissions, with more than 40,000 operations to remove teeth in children and teenagers last year. Claire Stevens is a consultant in paediatric dentistry and spokesperson for the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) and is keen to make a difference to these alarming statistics. As co-ordinator of BSPD's media team, she has appeared on ITV's Children's Hospital, BBC's The One Show (where she showed Jonathan Ross how to brush his teeth!), Channel 4's Food Unwrapped and BBC's Eat well for less. She has also been interviewed for Radio 4's Woman's Hour, You and Yours and More or less: Behind the Stats, LBC and Radio 5 Live.
