After 1 August 2006, changes to the Dentist Act 1984 (HM Government, 1984) confirmed that all registrants, including Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), could legally provide any type of treatment for patients. The DCP was however required to prove that she/he had the necessary training and was working within the limits of their competence.
Subsequently, on 1 August 2008, registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) became mandatory for all DCPs who were responsible for patient care.
While the current GDC (2013a) publication, Standards for the Dental Team, gives guidance on the overall professional responsibilities of all dental registrants, there is also clear and specific information in the further GDC (2013b) publication, Scope of Practice, regarding what treatment would, or would not, be appropriate for each registrant group to carry out. This of course includes guidance for the dental nurse.
