Dos and don'ts – the answers

This is the second of two articles featuring a number of dilemmas that may be faced by dental nurses concerning their role when treating patients and with regard to individual professional responsibilities. It will outline the best ways forward and refers to the current guidance available

As mentioned in last month's article, the current General Dental Council (GDC) publication Standards for the Dental Team (GDC, 2013a) gives guidance on the overall professional responsibilities of all dental registrants. There is also clear and specific information, in the further GDC publication Scope of Practice (GDC, 2013b), regarding what treatment would, or would not, be appropriate for each registrant group to carry out, including the dental nurse.

Guidance is therefore available to the dental nurse regarding both personal conduct, and patient treatment, but how does this work in practical terms? What sort of dilemmas may the nurse face? Below are some questions and answers.
