Social media – is a boon or a bane? Julie Bissett considers the pros and cons of an online presence

A common theme that runs through the dental community, when listening to various dental professionals discuss communication and professionalism, is the love/hate relationship many of us have with social media.

Often, people stand firmly on one side of the fence or the other – either steering clear of signing up to the new order of things or embracing online net working for all it has to offer.

Occasionally, the debate rages within us – loving the fun and the information one minute, appalled and annoyed at someone's ill-thought tweet or post another.

The internet has changed the way we all think and altered the way we communicate, with social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn the key components of relationship building.
