When it comes to safeguarding in the dental team, it’s necessary to always maintain a child focus so that we can see a situation from the child’s perspective rather than an adult.
Unfortunately, there are many ways in which a parent or carer can manipulate others to believe there is no reason to be concerned about a child’s wellbeing when, actually, any number of serious issues could be affecting them behind closed doors. Though none of us like to assume the worst, abuse and neglect is still prevalent in the United Kingdom, and as dental professionals, we have a duty to raise the alarm if we suspect something isn’t right.
