Dentures and systemic health: an overview

7 mins read Elderly care
The aim of this article is to provide a brief guide to dentures and oral and general health. It discusses the importance of cleaning dentures in relation to denture stomatitis, and what can be done to prevent and/or treat it

A denture is an option when providing an artificial replacement for one or more teeth. Ideally, the patient requires an aesthetically pleasing denture that provides comfort and function when eating, speaking, and biting the teeth together. The clinician will aim to create a denture that supports the soft tissues and has natural looking teeth, particularly anterior teeth. The function may be more complex to achieve and requires care in the design and evaluation of the quality of the impression, the retentive qualities of the denture—particularly in a lower denture—and ensuring that the occlusion provides multiple tooth contacts around the arch where possible to increase stability.
